Detransition Diaries: Claire’s Story
The second episode in our animated series amplifying detransitioner voices.
"What I actually needed were strong female role models who defied gender stereotypes while still being comfortable as a woman. I didn't have that." — Claire
We’re proud to present the second film in our animated series, Detransition Diaries—a space for detransitioners to speak in their own words. This episode features Claire Abernathy, a 20-year-old from Texas, who shares how early trauma, social pressures, and a rushed medical path shaped her transition—and what led her to walk it back. Her story cuts through the noise with clarity, honesty, and hard-won insight.
📽️ Watch Claire's story here:
Building on the first film with Forrest Smith, Claire’s story brings another deeply personal perspective to a conversation that too often overlooks the voices of detransitioners. Claire—also known as @burnyourbinder on X—has been a fearless advocate for young women, questioning the one-size-fits-all approach to gender distress.
Claire has written for Genspect before, including her critical reflections on the reality behind the “I Am Jazz” narrative and the misconceptions around “affirming” parenting.
Her story—shaped by early puberty, trauma, and misinterpreted distress—echoes those of countless detransitioners who were steered toward drastic medical interventions as the only path to relief, only to discover too late the cost of that promise.
In Claire’s case, she received a double mastectomy before turning 16. Her experience underscores the urgent need to listen to detransitioners without stigma or censorship.
We also want to remind our readers that free peer support groups for detransitioners are available through Genspect's Beyond Trans program. If you’re seeking understanding and connection, you’re not alone.
Stay tuned for more voices in this important series. If Claire’s story resonates with you, please share the film—and keep an eye out for future episodes as we continue to amplify these often unheard perspectives.
If you are worried about your medical transition, Genspect offers regular free online support meetings.
