Gender Under the Lens: Reflections on Ideology, Abuse, and Support
The latests from Genspect's Substack, Inspecting Gender.
This week, we start with a hard-hitting Genspect Exclusive by Stella O’Malley and Amanda Miller on the little-known but crucial clause in Trump’s Executive Order that could bring about the downfall of WPATH.
Another must-read is Victoria G’s Notes on a Detransition: Fetish Scene Abuse, Dissociation, and the Formation of a Trans Identity, in which she recounts how a decade of abuse in the fetish scene fuelled her trans identity and reveals the little-known affinity between BDSM, gender ideology, and the manipulation of vulnerable people under the guise of "consent." We’ve linked to Victoria’s appearance on Beyond Gender in “videos”.
Next, Stella O’Malley pauses to reflect on Genspect’s journey in Genspect is Growing Up. What began as a crisis-driven organisation in 2020 has gradually moved toward a more sustainable model, largely focused on providing support for individuals and families. Genspect is small but mighty, raising public awareness about the trans phenomenon and helping those who have been hurt by it on a shoestring.
Finally, Mia Hughes delivers a scathing critique in Be Bold, examining a leaked 2018 speech by WPATH’s Marci Bowers that reveals the extent to which WPATH has, then and now, prioritised ideology over medical ethics. Mia calls for a return to evidence-based care to protect vulnerable youth from irreversible harm.
This week, we also continue The Best of Genspect’s comprehensive look at how the routine use of puberty blockers became the treatment of choice for gender distressed children and who this created a crisis by putting thousands on an irreversible pathway to medical transition.

The Best of Genspect: Why Puberty Blockers?
Puberty blockers were first used to treat children experiencing gender distress by clinicians at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, Netherlands, during the 1990s. The Best of Genspect: The Puberty Blocker Crisis Unfolds
