This panel discusses the challenges and limits of psychotherapy when it comes to treating gender identity issues in young people. Susan Evans, Marcus Evans, and Stella O'Malley share their experiences working with families, the difficulties in providing solutions, and the importance of understanding the limits of mental health services.
Susan Evans is a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist and a retired Clinical Nurse Specialist. She is known for her work with children dealing with gender identity issues. In 2019, she started a legal case about the Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) at the Tavistock Clinic. She co-wrote the book Gender Dysphoria: A Therapeutic Model for Working with Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults. Now, she works privately, helping families and young people with gender identity challenges.
Marcus Evans is a retired NHS psychoanalyst and psychotherapist with 40 years of experience. He helped create the Fitzjohn’s Service and co-wrote the book Gender Dysphoria: A Therapeutic Model for Working with Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults.
Stella O'Malley is the founder and director of Genspect. She became known for her work on gender issues in the 2018 documentary Trans Kids: It’s Time To Talk. She created the Gender Dysphoria Support Network to help parents find the right support for their children. She co-hosts the podcast Gender: A Wider Lens with Sasha Ayad and co-wrote the book When Kids Say They’re Trans: A Guide for Thoughtful Parents.
